Humans love a good story. Think about the last time you heard (or watched) a good story unfold before you. You were invested from the beginning. Then as characters were introduced and the plot thickened, you waited with bated breath for the next moment.

Stories are how humans have communicated for centuries. Traditions were passed from generation to generation by words, music, or pictures. My grandfather didn’t speak much, but when he did, he would weave a tale sparing no detail. Okay, sure. Some people in my family prefer the headlined version, but not me. I wanted him to set the scene. And today, I communicate through stories. They can be short or they can be long with multiple plot twists. And yes, my storytelling isn’t for everyone.

Well, that is except for potential customers.

Businesses that use storytelling as part of their marketing strategy perform better than those that don’t. Stories give your ideal customer a way to connect with you by reflecting back on their own lives. Plus, in a world inundated with information, we want to be able to connect with a brand. We crave brand intimacy. And that intimacy will create trust. People do business with and buy from people they trust.

It doesn’t matter if you think you’re a great storyteller. If you have done the work to identify your ideal customer, when you speak, they will listen if you follow the five tips to storytelling that will make people want to buy from you.

Here’s a sneak peek:

  1. Know your why
  2. Structure is important
